WORK TRAINING CENTER FOR WOMEN KIDIST MARIAM
450 students attend cooking, sewing, or hairdressing courses each year. The students are, for the most part, young women who did not finish school, or migrants who have returned from countries in the Middle East. As part of the students’ vocational training and for the sustainability of the center itself, Kidist Mariam offers cafeteria service, a restaurant, clothing and uniform preparation, a hairdresser, and local crafts and spices for sale to the general public from Monday through Friday. Once they have finished their courses, most students find work in the region.
COMMUNITY SAVINGS GROUPS
A total of 930 women make up these groups in rural Meki. At their meetings, group members contribute a periodic amount of money to community savings. Members can request small business loans that are then paid back to the savings with interest. If members have emergencies, they can also take out interest-free loans. At the end of the year the money is distributed equally to members and then the effort begins again.
DAIRY GOATS FOR INCREASING INCOME OF RURAL WOMEN
300 women who are members of the savings groups also raise goats to add to the nutrition of their families. They earn income from selling the kid goats and from selling goat milk.
POTABLE WATER ACCESS FOR THE PEOPLE AND LIVESTOCK OF KORKE ADI
High levels of fluoride found in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia gravely affect the region’s community health. In Korke Adi (population 10,328), the CSP built a canal extension of 8 km to bring water without fluoride to the area and to improve community health. This project involved building three water tanks and establishing three water committees to manage the use and function of the water tanks and to pay for the water consumption.
CLASSROOM CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR, AND POTABLE WATER ACCESS IN THE MELKA ODA PRIMARY SCHOOL AND IN KORKE ADI PRIMARY SCHOOL
The project of school improvement includes building of new classrooms, renovating old ones, equipping, and installing potable water. The improvement of the facilities is resulting in an important increase of class attendance in both schools.
HEALTH CLASSROOMS AND CLASSROOMS FOR EQUAL SCHOOLING IN RURAL MEKI
This program is offered to 2,200 students from three primary schools in the rural Dugda District. It has two main approaches to community development: gender equality and health education. The program promotes clubs for adolescent girls, and then teachers and students in the program are given training about gender equality in schools. A first aid program is also offered to the students, who receive training in preventing the most common diseases in the area.
